So strange in times like these that we seldom pause to remember the political rebels, protesters and martyrs who sacrificed their freedom and sometimes their lives for the rights we take for granted. There are few monuments. Their stories … are not taught in our schools and seldom remembered in our museums … Perhaps the greatest tribute we can offer is to imagine an Australian republic with liberty and democracy at its heart.
